I just received the most wonderful and beautiful book about Yves St Laurent, as told by Pierre Berge, his life and business partner. It is a pictorial of YSL’s beautiful homes, as well as a look into the mentality of the designer. YSL was a man who couldn’t help but design; he was beyond passionate about his craft, he was obsessive, if you will, he was a visionary, a genius. Reading his story evoked nostalgia about the way it was.
Well, I just read that Sarah Jessica Parker (aka SJP) was just named Pres and Artistic Director of Halston. Now, I am a fan of SJP, I think she has great style, she looks great in clothes and I am a HUGE fan of Sex in the City. But how does she qualify for this job ? The likes of YSL, Dior, Emanuel Ungaro, Chanel, Valentino, et al , didn’t have any other career. They were 100% committed to their art. They didn’t act, produce, direct, licence their names…they were artists who lived and breathed their work. I love fashion, and have been around long enough to remember when fashion designers were revered. Now, I guess it takes celebrity to fuel interest. Is this an, if “Lindsay Lohan can do it so can SJP?” What has celebrity to do with designing??? Oh, BTW, Julia Roberts has just been named the face of Lancome…Call me crazy, but I don’t get it.
